Beyond Astra Sun Rise

A Word from the Solo Developer about the Genesis of Beyond Astra

I have long dreamed of a game where you could build your own sci-fi world, from the scale of a city to the scale of a galaxy, with great importance given to strategy, management, exploration, and conquest…

This dream is rooted in my childhood experiences with classics like Age of Empires, Master of Orion, and the Civilization series.

Beyond Astra draws inspiration from a variety of sources, blending cinematic and video game influences. The film Metropolis (1927) by Fritz Lang, with its exploration of society, technology, and fate, has deeply influenced the game’s setting and themes. Similarly, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) informs our exploration of existential themes and the role of technology. We also look to the epic narratives of Star Wars (1977-1983), Star Trek (1966-1969), and The Expanse (2015-2022) for their depiction of galactic conflicts and civilizational crisis.

In terms of video games, Civilization (1991-) and Alpha Centauri (1999) are crucial references for their geopolitical management and character development. Master of Orion (1993) and Imperium Galactica (1997) for the desire to link space and surfaces. We also draw inspiration from Caesar (1992) and Pharaoh (1999) for city building, Spore (2008) for the planetary aspect, and Star Wars: Empire at War (2006) for space combat.

Beyond Astra aims to contribute a fresh perspective to the 4X genre, pushing the technical boundaries of grand strategy games and offering a rich, accessible, and demanding space odyssey.

Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey.

We look forward to sharing more with you soon.
